Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer screening (Pap test) helps detect early changes in cervical cells before cancer develops. Cervical cancer often develops without symptoms, so regular screening is an important prevention tool. A Pap test identifies abnormal cells that can be treated early. Screening programs across Canada are gradually evolving toward HPV-based testing, which detects the virus responsible for most cervical cancers. Despite being largely preventable through vaccination and screening, cervical cancer cases have been rising in Canada, making regular screening and awareness increasingly important.

In the Yukon, Pap tests are recommended for people aged 25–69 who have ever been sexually active, even if they feel healthy. If you experience symptoms such as unusual bleeding, pelvic pain, or abnormal discharge, contact a health care provider as additional testing may be needed.
